What Basketball Taught Me About the Gospel
Posted 1 day ago - Apr 4, 2025
From: RaJan MonroeBasketball is my favorite sport!
If you read that in the voice of Lil' Bow Wow or Kurtis Blow — we are family now!
Basketball has been such an important part of my life; how I made friends, stayed out of trouble.... the list goes on! It's also how I grew in my relationship with God. You might think basketball and the gospel are unrelated, but they share powerful lessons about life and faith. Here's how:
The Team - the Body of Christ
Just like every player has a role — point guard, forward, or center — each believer has a unique purpose in God's plan or "playbook". When we work together and building chemistry within our individual roles collectively, we thrive!
"The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. " | 1 Corinthians 12:12
The Coach - Jesus
A good coach trains, encourages and leads their team. In life, Jesus is our ultimate guide, teaching us truth and showing us the way — even by example!
"Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." | John 14:6
Training - Spiritual Growth
Athletes train to improve, and believers must also practice spiritual habits like prayer and reading the Word to grow stronger.
"Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." | Psalm 119:105
The Game - Life's Challenges
In-game, basketball players face pressure and tough opponents. In life, we'll face struggles too, but with faith in Christ, we can overcome.
"Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?" | 1 John 5:5
The Trophy - The Reward
Athletes strive for trophies and rings that fade, but the Gospel promises a far greater prize — eternal life with Jesus! Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!
Just like basketball, faith requires teamwork, discipline, and trust in the ultimate Coach (JESUS)! Stay focused, train well, and keep your eyes on the prize.
